In preparation to sell, I’ve been cleaning out rooms and trying to get rid of things we’ve accumulated over the 20 years in the house. This solid oak cabinet came from my childhood house. Built by my father, we moved it to our basement when my parents moved. It housed an old television and the Wi, both of which haven’t even been turned on in years. The room has become a drop space for “stuff”, which we desperately need to get rid of.
Before
After dropping the television off at the electronic recycling depot, we put the heavy unit in the garage, and I deliberated with myself about a future use. Mineral Fusion paint has successfully transformed other pieces of furniture in my home. But where could I use this large cabinet? I puzzled over this for a few days before heading to the paint store.
I returned home with a jar of raw silk paint, a warm white that would work perfectly at the lake……..against the white washed pine walls.
After removing the doors, hinges and knobs, I decided to give the piece a quick sanding. This removed the sheen from the top coat that was brushed on more than 30 years ago by my dad! Yes, my dad built this for our basement rec room when I was in high school. I still have memories of the VCR that would blink after a power outage, until one of us kids would reset it!
The oak was soaking up the paint…….maybe a primer is a good idea. Luckily I found some in my stash of paint.
Over several days (weeks actually……..life gets busy)! and several coats……..primer and paint, it started to come together. I ended up buying a second jar of paint, which increased the project cost. But had I a used a primer to begin with, I would have required far less. The oak must have been extremely dry (we had a wood stove in my house growing up), because typically I use very little of this paint and it covers well.
I thought about applying a wallpaper, or barnboard effect to the back of the cabinet. That’s part of the reason the project dragged on, I have a hard time making decisions. After some measuring, I decided the cabinet would work as extra storage at the lake. A small table with some storage held my microwave, but this larger piece would fill the space perfectly. And more storage is great…….or is it?! I’d rather not have to do this decluttering again.
Once the painting was finished, I decided to style it up, and see if I needed to change the back. I was also worried the microwave would look dwarfed in the large opening. I still may need to add a shelf.
I didn’t have much on hand to style it up………the wine bottle is empty (this had my husband laughing is head off). My wooden BBQ caddy on the microwave seems to fill in the space just fine……..I will live with this, for now anyways!
