Not too little, Not too much…..Just right.
My husband and I have been dreaming about our future home on the lake for quite a number of years………a space where family and friends can relax and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. Enough space to find a private spot to be with yourself or to gather with others. A calm and understated environment that feels cozy and not cold. A place that blends into the surrounding trees but still welcomes people.
The plans have been ready for a couple of years, and we break ground this month. I have my binder full of magazine clippings, and my online idea books filled with things that have caught my eye. Now is the time to really decide the look and feel we are seeking, what’s important and what’s frivolous and unnecessary.
When I opened my inbox a couple of weeks ago, Melissa from Polished Habitat wrote about creating your own mood board. How professional would I feel if I could do this myself! Of course I had to revisit Steps 1, 2 and 3 before this final step. Much of those steps I had essentially completed in my head, but printing off the worksheets and having it in front of me would simplify the process.
Printed sheets in hand, I sat down with my coffee and got to work. It didn’t take long, as I have been dreaming about this space for some time. The style direction was also fairly simple……..the douglas fir timber frames are already ordered, and I already bought two sofas that my husband insists must work in the new house.
When it came to Step 3, I was worried this was going to be a challenge for me. Find an inspiration piece …….artwork that embodies the feel you are seeking for the space. Then I realized that I recently started a rug hooking project with the help of my good friend. I’ve always admired the beautiful pieces in her studio, and envisioned one for myself. We started talking about doing a large piece for my new house at our weekly knit nights, last year.
This month I visited her studio and she helped me draw out the abstract pattern on the linen, and helped me with the colour scheme……based on my request for whites and greens. This is a big project…….something she could do in a few weeks, but will take me six months (if I’m lucky!) When I put all the yarns and wool together, it just feels right. The wool will add warmth to the fairly modern and clean space I desire.
Last year we visited the Baltic area, and I felt at home in the many spaces we found ourselves in……..the outdoor surroundings as well as the indoor. The people seemed to embrace their surroundings and live very simply. Lagom………..not too little, not too much……just right. This one word pretty much sums up the feel and function we hope to achieve.
The mood board is a work in progress. Now that I have the basic work complete, the final vision should be fairly easy………..
